My Dublin House

My Dublin House
St. Mary's

Intro

This blog is about our journey restoring and renovating our 'new' very old house in Dublin and how my ideas are reflected and incorporated into the house design. It is not just about design, but how the house will work for us a family with 2 very lively boys and trying to update the house to 21st Century living without taking away the traditional features, charm and history.

Hopefully a happy marriage of Scandi and Irish design and lifestyle!

I hope you will enjoy the journey with me, and feel free to comment at any time or send me an email if you have any question.

And we're off!

Work has finally started! We are starting with the demolition stage or 'enabling work' as the architect is calling it.

Basically everything that has to go is being broken down, taken out. Floors taken up, numbered and photographed as well as the granite front and back steps. All to be put back again later on.

All very exciting although daunting as well, lets just hope they don't find any old bones under the floorboards as I could really do without any more delays.

Here's a few pics from day 1 - Today, will keep updating as we progress.

Once there was a garage......

Boarding going up.

Basement being demolished.

Planning Permission Granted!

Finally the 'FUN' can start, just a few minor details to clarify but in theory we can start!

Had meeting with our architect, Johnny Bennett from Extend last Friday and think we have finally solved the design element of our en-suite which was causing some headaches as the room is big but it's all doors, windows and fireplace so a tricky space.

Boys Room

One day this will be the boys bedroom - a bit of work to do, but think it will be great and they will have enough space. At least the walls are thick enough to keep the noise in or out!

Note the door - that is a wall!

Beautiful ceiling which needs lots of TLC.

Corridor/Wall - 16th Century castle wall.

Nice high ceiling - maybe a swing?

A few before pictures.....

Front door with original lock and key.

Hall Stairs - gorgeous window = lots of light

Stunning barrel ceiling, all 3 roses in situ.

Corridor/Wall - Into the Green Room

Family Room - big beautiful windows overlooking garden.

Doors into garden from Green Room.

Kitchen - will be getting a full makeover.

Planning Application

Planning application has gone in finally.... Should have an answer in 7-8 weeks. All we are looking to do is knock down the garage and extend parking area and replace with a modern wooden structure/shed. Also, adding a set of doors into the garden from the family room and the all important - Central Heating!

Keys

We finally got the keys to our new home last Friday and we had an impromptu celebration picnic with friends in the garden. Can't quite believe we have this beautiful historical home with an amazing garden in a great location, never thought we would be so lucky to find anything this special.

This blog

I have decided to write a blog about our 'new' house in Dublin. I moved to Dublin with my family last August 2013 from 20+ years in London SW11.

We never thought that we would find such an exceptional house in an enviable location and let alone be able to buy it, but with help from the London housing market being on a continuous up, we were and now we are nearly there. After putting an offer on the house back in November we will be the proud owners of St. Mary's by the end of this week.

This blog will be a diary following the renovations of the house together with my ideas, everyday tasks and how my life with Scandinavian design and living incorporate the Irish.

I hope you will enjoy the journey with me, and feel free to comment at any time or send me an email if you have any question.
